When she was a child, journalist Veronica Pedrosa was forced to leave the Philippines as a daughter of dissidents during the Marcos regime. Now Pedrosa is a correspondent for Al Jazeera English. Bearing familiarity with the Arab world, a person like Pedrosa can’t help but correlate the Edsa People Power as a kind-of precursor to the Arab Spring uprisings.

But as more nations under dictatorship use People Power to topple down dictators, the Philippines elects them back. In 2010, former First Lady Imelda Marcos was elected Congressman. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was elected as Senator. Those that we sacrificed so much to put out of office are put back in office in a culture of impunity. “The guilty going unpunished,” Pedrosa says.

Pedrosa goes to the Philippines to find out why no one paid for the Marcos atrocities and, personally, why her family had to flee the country. In answering those questions, Pedrosa will know what has changed in the country she was forced left behind and what has remained the same. Her documentary is titled Imelda and Me.
